One piece, four composers
A commission from Welsh Sinfonia will find the work of a quartet of composers combining in one performance piece. Composer John Hardy has melded three pieces by his students at Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama into a work which he is calling Night Flight.
Hardy, who teaches composition and music technology at the RWCMD, has supplied music to bookend each of the three sections. “It’s designed to be abstract and evocative,” he explains. “Students can reflect in their own way… I’m not trying to create a seamless whole.” The work is structured so that each contribution is detachable and the student composers’ works can also be performed solus.
Night Flight will itself be bookened by Haydn’s Symphony no 22 “The Philosopher” and Schubert’s Symphony no 5. Mark Eager will conduct the Welsh Sinfonia on Thursday 22nd March at the Dora Stoutzker Hall, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Cardiff. Tickets are available from RWCMD in person, by telephone on 029 2039 1391 or online at www.rwcmd.ac.uk.
